Tshwane House

Tshwane House – Office of the Mayor

Workspace, Office, Municipal

This was a project 8 years in the making. The project was won in a competition and was delivered as part of a PPP (Public Private Partnership). The design changed numerous times before settling on a very efficient rational plan and architectural treatment that provided value to all parties. The previous building was deemed to be unsafe and was demolished making way for this office building in the centre of the Pretoria CBD. The ‘H-shaped’ wing design allows for maximum departmental flexibility. Concepts of openness, transparency and inclusion were adopted in the planning.

The main entrance into the building occurred via a large public space that was effectively part of the city. Civic stairs elevated this podium sufficiently to provide a gesture of implied importance, without disconnecting it from the street. Careful attention was paid to visual penetration into the square, and into the main atrium entrance.

The colonnade in front of the building was designed to be part of the daily pedestrian route. Providing shade in the summer, and protection from the rain in winter. It has also been used as a place to sit and wait for the taxi’s that serve the CBD..
