Kumasi International Airport

Kumasi International Airport

Airport

Kumasi was in need of an upgrade to their airport to attain international airport status. The new linear terminal proposal was to create an impressive airport that would be able to service 800,000 PAX per annum. The terminal building was designed to be able to be expanded in the future, however it was decided to implement the expansion during the construction. The funding of the airport was via the UKEF (UK Export Fund), which dictated the use of a minimum amount of UK based materials and services. The airport will be instrumental in ensuring Kumasi will appear on the international radar.

The end user GAC (Ghana Airports Company), was particular about the interiors and architectural treatments too ensure that the building was sympathetic to the local colours and sensitivities.

In order to ensure fire safety a smoke extraction philosophy was incorporated into the design that gave the building an intelligence and sophistication normally only seen in larger buildings.
