St Helena Airport

Airport

The island of St Helena with it’s 1,400 inhabitants, is the second most remote location in the world. The UK Govt under DfID provided funding and technical assistance and appointed Basil Read as the concessionaire. The airport was intended to provide the island with a boost in tourism in order that the it could be self sustaining an not be a burden on the British tax payer.

Client: Basil Read as concessionaire

Location: Island of St Helena

Size: 3,500m2

Cost: undisclosed

Status: Completed (2015)

The terminal has received bad press in the media due to the wind sheer that is experienced, making it challenging to land large planes. The benefits to the economy are still to be appreciated. The interior concept was changed completely when conversations were held with the island representatives.

The basic planning for the terminal building was provided by Atkins for DfID. The final design and every aspect of the construction was signed off by DfID’s team of assessors.
